The Government of Guyana must urgently clarify targeted detention of Haitian travelers
On November 7, 2020 26 Haitian nationals legally entered Guyana via Barbados of their own accord. As citizens of a CARICOM nation, Haitians are legally entitled to travel to and stay in Guyana for up to six months, hassle free. According to media reports, they were taken into custody the very next day, and are described as being either in ‘protective custody’ or ‘detained’, with ‘the Government claiming that they might be victims of human trafficking,’ and that they might be sent back to Haiti.
