Cuba, COVID-19 and the Caribbean: Internationalism & Anti-Capitalism

As the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded, we saw the United States turn inward and began to unravel, denying healthcare to millions of its own citizens, while blocking shipments of respirators to Barbados, the Bahamas and Cayman Islands, and deporting COVID-19 positive patients back to Haiti and Jamaica. In contrast, Cuba reached out not just to the Caribbean, where they sent over 500 medical professionals to all corners of the region, but also to the world. Leading by example, Cuba demonstrated another way forward, showing that the way to combat COVID-19 was through the extension of compassion, science and solidarity, with great success.

Join the Caribbean Solidarity Network on January 27, for a conversation with Issac Saney of the Canadian Network on Cuba. Dr. Saney is a Professor of History at Dalhousie University, and the author of Cuba: A Revolution in Motion (2003). We will discuss the vital role that Cuban medical brigades have played across the Caribbean, the lessons learned from Cuba’s internationalism, and the struggle to invent and distribute a true people’s vaccine against COVID-19.
