In 2015, Jamaica was the first country in the Caribbean to take important, meaningful steps to decriminalize small quantities of cannabis and removed restrictions for medicinal, scientific, and cultural uses. However, the much-anticipated “green rush” that was supposed to take the Jamaican economy out of its stagnation and into prosperity seems to be a premature, if unrealistic projection in the contemporary global context. Furthermore, what does this mean for the recently announced cannabis reform initiatives in St. Vincent, Antigua, Barbados and Trinidad?

As part of the Caribbean Solidarity Network's "Groundings in the Diaspora" series, this public forum will address the issues related to Caribbean cannabis reform, looking at the global power of Canadian cannabis companies, what this means for the emerging Caribbean industry, and how can we push for alternative models that benefit those long time growers and communities who are now at risk of losing out.
